I have no idea what happened this year. Unfortunately, that’s a lie. I know everything that happened this year, and I think it’s taking up too much space in my brain. This may be bad.

I may not even be able to recap everything, but oh God, I’ll certainly try. And I’ll start off with the one I know most about.

Memes

Oh man, was it one heck of a year for memes, and it was way better than last year, too. Last year, everybody just made fun of United Airlines and EA. This year, we ate Tide Pods. To be honest, many memes have dark/offensive backstories, so I don’t feel great linking them here. But I will anyway.

Before I start, I’d like to just let you know: There are MANY Smash Bros memes in here. This isn’t bias because I like Smash, but because there were so many viral Smash memes this year because of Ultimate. So you’ll be seeing a lot of that.

Anyway, I have to type now.

Yaaah, it’s rewind time.

Ugandan Knuckles

I feel I don’t need to explain this one. I don’t think it’s necessary to link it either.

Logan Paul in the forest

Why am I writing this? Don’t make me explain this one either. Please.

Tide Pods

Finally, one that isn’t offensive and actually worth explaining. Tide Pods became a huge trend in January. “Who needs to wash their clothes when you can eat tasty soap packets instead?” said the Internet. “Stop,” said the health department. “No.”

“No u”

This meme was widely used, both in real life conversation and through text. The term “no u” basically was just used as a comeback to an insult.

Change my mind

“Change my mind” was a meme that was a man sitting behind a table, with a sign saying “Male privilege is a myth, change my mind.” People then began editing the image to say different things, such as “Pluto is not a planet – change my mind.”

Steamed Hams

Steamed Hams” was a skit from The Simpsons episode “22 Short Films About Springfield” that involved Principal Skinner inviting Superintendent Chalmers over for lunch. Long story short, things don’t go so well for Skinner – his roast burns, and he has to come up with quick excuses for Chalmers to make him think everything is alright. People began to make variants of this skit, such as Steamed Hams except everything goes extremely well.

Fortnite

I’m not going to link this one. You know what it is. You know who plays it. You know everything about it, even if you’ve never played it. Fortnite took the world by storm this year, and I’m actually surprised (but happy) that it didn’t get Game of the Year. It’s been criticized and hated on the past few months (especially by me. I don’t. Like. Fortnite.) but people still play it. The game broke records. Many, many records. If you’ve got a computer, console, or any device that has internet connection, there’s about a 95% chance you’ve played Fortnite. But of course, if a game gets this big, there has to be memes, right? You’re very, very, VERY right. Fortnite memes attempted to rule 2018, and it almost did…if it weren’t a game, it probably would have. Though Fortnite is now a game hated by many of its previous players, if someone asks me if I remember 2018, the first thing that will come to my mind will be the fond memory of Fortnite.

You know I had to do it to ’em

This is the last one I’m gonna explain, because I’m typing this on New Years Eve and I don’t have enough time to get through all descriptions. This meme is hard to explain, so I’m just gonna tell you the premise. The “you know I had to do it to ’em” meme involved a guy wearing a white colored shirt and shorts on a sidewalk, with his hands crossed in front of him. This person uploaded the picture to Twitter with the caption, “You know I had to do it to ’em.” Long story short, the image went viral.

For now on, I won’t be giving meme descriptions, and I won’t be going over every single big meme.

Just kidding, I’ll be giving every single big meme to you (and I’ll explain a couple more). Have fun clicking links.

Stefán Karl Stefánsson’s Death (August 21, 2018)

This one wasn’t really a meme, more like a mourning. But I’m classifying it as a meme anyway. I feel I should explain this one.

Stefán Karl Stefánsson, the man who played Robbie Rotten in Lazy Town, died of cancer. The internet was horribly depressed for about two weeks straight. Robbie Rotten was a big meme on the internet back in 2016 and 2017, and was one of the longest running, most loved memes. Many made huge tributes to him, and memes are still made to this day.

They did surgery on a grape

I have to explain this one. I HAVE to. You know why? Because the meme took place in my city, that’s why.

The “they did surgery on a grape” meme is simple: They did surgery on a grape. Did you hear? They did surgery. ON A GRAPE! Have you heard this? At Edward Hospital, they did surgery on a grape to practice. Since grapes are similar to human features (somehow, I don’t know), they do surgery on grapes. They did surgery on a grape.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate: World of Light memes

I have to explain this one, because I can’t find a proper source to explain it for me. I guess I should stop being lazy.

On November 1st, Nintendo hosted a livestream that revealed everything else that would be in the game Super Smash Bros Ultimate (which would arrive a month later), a trailer appeared at the end that showed that there would be a story mode in Ultimate. In the trailer (which you can watch here), the characters were attacked by a giant light monster, Galeem, and when touched by the light, they disintegrated, similar to the Infinity War memes. Thus, you can imagine what they made out of that. The internet just seems to love disintegration, doesn’t it?

Uh oh, we’re starting to get to the last of the memes. Wear your seatbelts, we’re going through December.

BUT WAIT! Aren’t you missing one?

Yes, I’ve saved my very favorite one for last.

Drum roll please…

And the meme of the year goes to…

Will Smith!

I actually hinted this one at the beginning of the article. This is a fairly recent meme, actually. As many of you may know, YouTube makes a video every year called YouTube Rewind, where it recaps everything that happened that year…well, until this year. This year’s YouTube Rewind was hated by pretty much everyone. “Oh Shaun, that’s not true. There’s been worse.” No, there hasn’t. Remember Baby by Justin Bieber, the most disliked video on YouTube? Not anymore, because YouTube Rewind is now the video with the most dislikes. As of the writing of this article, it’s at over 14 million dislikes, while Baby is at 9 million. It took Rewind just six days to become the most hated video, while it took baby way, way longer. Anyway, here’s the real meme:

Will Smith is seen at the very beginning of the Rewind, staring at a landscape, when his phone rings. He turns around, faces the camera, and looks at his phone. “Yaaah, it’s rewind time!” he says. “If I controlled Rewind, I would want…Fortnite. And Marques Brownlee.” At the end, he looks through binoculars, sees a flying bus (unfortunately, a Fortnite reference), and says “Ahh, that’s hot. That’s hot.” The internet made a big meme out of this one, and used “Yaaah” and “That’s hot” as memes. Overall, I really love this meme. It’s definitely one of the really humorous ones I’ve come across. Here’s my favorite variation of the meme.

Well, that’s it for memes in 2018. It was definitely a fun year for the internet. Can’t wait for 2019. Bye.

Wait, you thought I forgot another one?

Really? Oh, I know what I missed. The biggest event of the internet this entire year.

Pewdiepie VS. T-Series

Ah, yes. The ongoing event to become the biggest YouTube channel ever. So far, Pewdiepie is on top, but who knows what 2019 has in store.

I don’t want to start typing paragraphs explaining this, so click on the link please.

Well, that’s officially it. 2018 is over, and we’ve had a lot of fun with memes. I hope 2019 has even better ones in store, but we’ll have to find out.

MEME. REVIEW. *clap clap*

Happy New Year.
