I was in Chicago for the Cubs Convention 2019 this weekend, and, while sitting in a bar-area restaurant inside of the hotel I was in, a song comes on that, though I cannot hear very well, it seems…well, really good. Since I did not have Shazam on my phone, I had my dad Shazam it for me. What popped up was “Reflections” by MisterWives, a strangely named band I had never heard of. I decided to write it down in my notes app, and leave it until I got home.

Oh. My. Goodness. Soon after I got home from Chicago on Sunday, I began to listen to MisterWives through Spotify, as I played a game I’ve been reliving recently: Minecraft (usually when I want to freely listen to music, I play Minecraft, because Minecraft doesn’t have music in the background, specifically when online). I began with MisterWives’ first album, Our Own House. by the first song of the album, which was also called Our Own House, I was already blown away. How is it possible that a pop band could be this good, considering I don’t like pop very much? As I got to the second, third, fourth song in the album, I could tell MisterWives were doing something different. Most pop bands don’t sound like this. The notes that the band hits, the instruments, even the singer, Mandy Lee, obviously had elements that other pop artists don’t. I still don’t exactly know what it is they do – maybe they don’t repeat the same verses over and over? I really don’t know.
Over the last month or two, Foo Fighters became my second favorite band, right next to Paramore, a punk/rock band I’ve adored since 2013. Of course, Paramore made an 80’s themed pop album a couple years ago, but it’s still great, because Paramore made it. Whatever Paramore makes is good. Now, however, on my not-official-best-band-list-because-I-don’t-make-those, MisterWives is definitely taking over spot 3, which previously held Echosmith.

Get away from me. I’m listening to MisterWives while writing this. I can’t be disturbed. Hiss. Go. Bye.
